چکیده

Propagation and reverberation of acoustic fields in shallow waters depend strongly on the spatial variability of seabed geoacoustic parameters, and lack of knowledge of seabed variability is often a limiting factor in acoustic modeling applications. However, direct sampling (e.g., coring) of vertical and lateral variability is expensive and laborious, and matched-field and other long-range inversion methods fail to provide sufficient resolution. The long-term goal of this work is to use a Bayesian inversion approach in combination with seabed reflectivity data to investigate and quantify spatial variability of seabed sediments. For proper quantitative examination of spatial variability, it is important to differentiate between parameter estimate uncertainty, model parameterization effects and actual spatial variability.

ONR Postdoctoral Fellowship: Geoacoustic Inversion and Source Localization in a Randomly Fluctuating Shallow Water Environment

The long-term goal of this project is to understand and mitigate the uncertainties of shallow-water acoustic inversions caused by strong oceanic temporal and spatial variability. To achieve this goal, we need to investigate the connection between acoustic signal fluctuations and the water-column variability, and further incorporate this connection into the acoustic inversions for increasing the...

Uncertainty of Propagation and Reverberation in Shallow Water Environments due to Seafloor Variability

Evaluate the relative importance of various types of seafloor variability on the predictability of the temporal evolution of acoustic transmissions and reverberation in shallow water waveguides. The measures of uncertainty include the predictability of the levels of the transmissions/reverberation, the decay rates, and the coherent features of the time-depth evolution of the receptions. Seafloo...

Estimating snapping shrimp noise in warm shallow water

Snapping shrimp noise is thought to be a major component of ambient noise at high frequencies (2 kHz 300 kHz) in warm shallow water. We have designed an experiment to investigate its temporal and spatial distribution and variability. This information has application to many underwater acoustic systems in providing background knowledge about the structure of this class of noise. The experiment r...
